A Report from Macao

Macao SAR Government has temporarily closed educational institutions, entertainment venues including casinos, public service closed with limited operations available in an attempt to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, since March 2020. There were 46 positive cases and all recovered. We are grateful that the pandemic situation is fairly controllable in Macao.

The Macao Youth Symphony Orchestra training courses had stopped due to the unprecedented pandemic situation caused by COVID-19, we organized online lesson for students as scheduled timetable, even though we got into a situation where we couldn’t really do any concert planned at all.

The Orchestra training resumption on the first day of student back to school. We raced against time and strive for performance at the end of June in Macao Cultural Centre. Finally, we made it, the opening concert of MYSO music festival has been held on 28th June 2020 which was the first concert of Macao after a hard time. We organized Livestream on our Facebook page:

We have to follow the Macao SAR Government’s measures to combat the pandemic, taking forehead temperatures, wear face mask properly; all of our winds section players must have the COVID-19 testing done before attending rehearsal and concerts; also providing alcohol-based hand rub for our players and audiences at the concert venue; for maintain a distance and avoid crowd gathering, in the grand auditorium, the number of seat availability from 1080 reduce to 373.

“Walk in adversity, light up hope”

11th Music Seedings is one of the brand concerts of MYSO, two concerts had held in Macao Cultural Centre on 18th -19th July 2020, aims to provide a performance platform for young beginners, school bands and orchestras; and integrate music into society and families. It is an activity to promote music education. This year, the form of performance has changed, which we did not have many young beginners and schools involved as the past. We had MYSO core players brought us a concert of the quartet, quintet, octet, decet, string ensemble, etc. Also, MYSO Junior Orchestra, MYSO Concert Band, and Pui Ching Middle School Macau – String Orchestra.

The program was astonishing and variety which included L. V. Beethoven – Symphony No.2 in D major, Op.21, James Swearingen – Blue Ridge Saga, W.A. Mozart – Rondo for Horn in E flat major, K.371, and St. Paul’s Suite – Gustav Holst.
